“Finding yourself is actually returning to yourself. An unlearning, and excavation, a remembering who you were before the world got its hand on you.”

 — Emily McDowell

Carissa Cullum Ferdinand is a psychotherapist who specializes in working with young adults from diverse backgrounds. She is a National Certified Counselor and holds a Master of Arts in Counseling from Northwestern University, a CACREP-accredited institution. Carissa is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Michigan and Illinois, as well as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in Florida.

Before becoming a therapist, Carissa worked in student affairs and higher education, gaining valuable experience supporting college students through academic, personal, and developmental challenges. In addition to her counseling degree, Carissa holds a Master of Arts in Latin American Studies from the University of Florida and a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from The University of Tampa. Through these educational experiences, Carissa developed an understanding of racial, gender, and cultural dynamics that informs her work as a psychotherapist.

Carissa's therapeutic approach is grounded in a psychodynamic framework, exploring how one’s life experiences and inner workings can shape present-day challenges. She uses a trauma-informed and intersectional lens that not only guides her therapeutic work but also informs how she assesses and diagnoses clients. Carissa integrates attachment and person-centered theories to build a collaborative therapeutic relationship that aids in the healing process. For patients with creative interests, she encourages the use of creativity as a therapeutic outlet and a tool toward achieving specific treatment goals. Carissa is also one of the PPS providers who teaches our DBT skills class, which provides structured support for clients seeking to develop emotional regulation and coping strategies.

Carissa is licensed to see patients in Michigan, Illinois and Florida.
